Preventive

PrEP is preventive

PrEP is taken by HIV-negative people at ongoing risk. Daily oral options — Truvada and Descovy — and the injectable Apretude (given every two months) are available. When taken consistently, PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV infection.

Urgent

PEP is urgent

PEP is an emergency treatment used after a possible HIV exposure. It must be started within 72 hours and taken for 28 days. Because HIV can establish permanent infection within 24 to 36 hours of exposure, PEP is a medical emergency. If you had a recent exposure, start your intake now.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before getting started with PrEP or PEP care.

Still have questions?

Your clinician will walk through any concerns during your intake visit — no question is too small.

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a prescription medication taken by HIV-negative people to prevent HIV infection. When taken consistently, oral PrEP reduces sexual transmission risk by approximately 99%. It comes as a daily oral tablet — Truvada or Descovy — or as a long-acting injectable called Apretude, given every two months.
PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is an emergency HIV prevention medication taken after a possible HIV exposure. It must be started within 72 hours and taken for 28 days. PEP is for emergency situations only — it is not a substitute for regular PrEP.
PrEP is taken before possible HIV exposure to prevent infection over time — used regularly by people at ongoing risk. PEP is an emergency treatment started after a possible exposure and must begin within 72 hours. Both require a clinician evaluation and prescription.
Immediately. PEP must be started within 72 hours (3 days) of a possible HIV exposure — the sooner the better. HIV can establish a permanent infection within 24 to 36 hours of exposure, which is why PEP is treated as a medical emergency. Complete your intake now if you have had a recent possible exposure.
Most insurance plans and many Medicaid programs cover PrEP. Enter your insurance information before your appointment. If you are uninsured, manufacturer savings programs and state assistance programs may help significantly. We can help you navigate your options during your visit.
Yes. HIV testing is required to confirm you do not have HIV before starting PrEP, along with kidney function and hepatitis screening. Your DevotedDoc clinician will order the appropriate labs and help you understand where to get them completed near you.
Yes. Ongoing PrEP care requires regular follow-up visits and lab testing every 3 months. DevotedDoc provides all follow-up visits via telehealth, so no in-person appointments are required for routine monitoring.
We do more than just deliver results. If your testing suggests HIV or hepatitis C, we review results with you, explain what they mean, coordinate additional labs if needed, provide treatment recommendations when appropriate, and create a written care plan that includes specialist referral guidance. You will not be left without a clear next step.
No — the visit fee covers your telehealth appointment with the clinician. Labs are billed separately through your chosen lab, and medications are billed through your pharmacy. We will help you understand costs and navigate insurance or savings programs during your visit.
Yes. All DevotedDoc visits are 100% private and HIPAA-compliant. Visits are conducted via secure telehealth — no waiting rooms, no in-person contact required. Your information is never shared without your consent.
